Complex Regional Pain Syndrome is a debilitating chronic pain condition that requires specialized expertise to diagnose and treat effectively. Dr. Bernton is a leading expert in the diagnosis and treatment of CRPS, holding dual credentials in both CRPS management and thermographic diagnostic imaging. He is qualified to interpret thermographic diagnostic imaging and has extensive experience in CRPS evaluation and treatment.

Accurate diagnosis of CRPS depends on meeting established clinical criteria, including the Budapest criteria, and distinguishing CRPS from other conditions that may present with similar symptoms. Dr. Bernton utilizes a comprehensive diagnostic approach that includes detailed clinical examination, thermographic imaging, and careful assessment of sensory, motor, vasomotor, and trophic changes. He founded the first Colorado facility for diagnosis of CRPS combining thermography and Quantitative Sudomotor Autonomic Testing (QSART), providing a level of clinical authority that is rare in the state.

Treatment of CRPS requires a multi-modal approach tailored to each patient's presentation and stage of disease. Dr. Bernton develops individualized treatment plans that may incorporate pharmacological management, interventional procedures, physical rehabilitation strategies, and coordination with other specialists. He also provided input to the Colorado Division of Workers' Compensation in the formation of the Medical Treatment Guidelines for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome.
